ACT Law Society welcomes new Attorney-General

The Law Society of the ACT (the Society) extends its congratulations to Tara Cheyne MLA on her appointment as the new Attorney-General for the Australian Capital Territory.

The Society notes Ms Cheyne’s previous roles as Minister for Human Rights and Minister for Business and Better Regulation, as well as her history of being a strong advocate for community safety in the Belconnen region and for reconciliation within the Territory.

ACT Law Society President Lisa Quilty said “Ms Cheyne’s engagement with Standing Committees on areas as diverse as justice and community, gender equality and the environment, as well as her contributions to discussions relating to new health and welfare legislation for Canberra (particularly, the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2023), will support her to perform her new role as the first legal officer of the ACT.

“The Society looks forward to engaging and working closely with Ms Cheyne in the future, in representing the interests of Canberra legal practitioners and fostering “good law” for the Territory.”

The Society also sincerely thanks Shane Rattenbury MLA for his tireless work over the last four years as Attorney-General. The close working relationship between the Society and Mr Rattenbury has consistently been characterised by open dialogue and respect. The Society wishes Mr Rattenbury well in his continued role in the Legislative Assembly serving the constituents of Kurrajong.
