New Solicitors' Conduct Rules - Commencing 1 January 2026

New Solicitors’ Conduct Rules – Commencing 1 January 2026

The new Legal Profession (Solicitors) Conduct Rules 2025 (Solicitors’ Conduct Rules) will commence on 1 January 2026.

These amendments follow sector-wide consultation and are designed to bring the ACT into alignment with the Australian Solicitors’ Conduct Rules (ASCR) while also addressing emerging issues in legal practice.

What members need to know

  • The new Rules will replace the Legal Profession (Solicitors) Conduct Rules 2015 from 1 January 202

  • The ACT-specific Guidelines and Commentary will be retired at the same time

  • From commencement, members are encouraged to refer to the ASCR Guidelines and Commentary for interpretive guidance. Please note that these materials do not form part of the Rules and should not be treated as definitive or exhaustive

  • The amendments reflect evolving expectations around sexual harassment, bullying and psychosocial risks in legal workplaces
