Obiter Dictum, Autumn 2020
I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you all, as the Chair of the Young Lawyers Committee for 2020. I look forward to meeting many of you at our events this year.
The committee aims to organise a fun range of events throughout the year for newly admitted lawyers (within their first five years of practice) or under 35 years of age. If you fall within either of those categories, or are simply new to Canberra and looking to build your network, then our events are for you.
Across the year we run an abundance of social and networking events, CPD Seminars, and our mentor program. 2020 will be a busy year for us, so to keep up to date with our upcoming events, please visit the Law Society Website or follow us on Facebook and LinkedIn.

Charity
Each year our committee selects one charity to support. In 2019, we raised $4,000 for Hands Across Canberra.
Our charity partner for 2020 is Batyr. Batyr is a national charity focussed on raising mental health awareness in young Australians. Through their school, university and work programs, they promote awareness of mental ill-health and related issues. You can find out more about Batyr at www.batyr.com.au.
Events update
On 30 January, we held our event to launch the legal year, lawn bowls at the RUC. This event was proudly sponsored by Lawyerbank. Although it was warm, this was a relaxed social event, with tasty canapes and bevvies. Special thanks to Lawyerbank for providing goodie bags to each attendee.
The Mentor Program has recently launched for 2020, with a high level of interest. There will be a second round in around August 2020 if you missed out on registering for the first round.
If you have any ideas for how we can better support young lawyers in our community, please feel free to email the committee with your suggestions at mail@actyounglawyers.asn.au.
