Protecting Your Practice: Cyber Risk in the Legal Profession

Protecting Your Practice: Cyber Risk in the Legal Profession

Cybersecurity had become a growing concern for all legal practitioners. In this session, presented by Malcolm Heath from Lawcover, we explored key cyber risks facing the legal profession, including email interception, impersonation scams, and the manipulation of payment instructions. These tactics were increasingly used to exploit trust between lawyers and clients, leading to financial loss and reputational damage. The ACT Law Society had seen a recent rise in such incidents, particularly in conveyancing, though all areas of practice were affected. Attendees learned practical steps to reduce exposure, protect client information, and communicate cyber risks effectively—including at the outset of a matter.
